Virginia DOC Stafford Release Routes
Stafford County has no active VADOC prison in the current facility directory. That does not mean a Stafford criminal case cannot produce a state prisoner. RRJ treats aggregate sentences over 12 months as state sentences. Its records staff send jail credits to VADOC, which calculates the term and issues a Legal Update Sheet. The person may remain at RRJ for a time before transfer to a state institution.
A VADOC exit can take several forms. A sentence may be satisfied and the person discharged. An eligible prisoner may leave on parole. Another person may complete prison custody but begin court-ordered post-release supervision. Transfer within the state system is not release. A community corrections office listed as the location means the person is outside prison under supervision, not incarcerated at that office.

Search Virginia DOC Release Records
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator is the correct public route for a state prisoner or supervisee connected to Stafford. It accepts first and last name together or a DOC ID. Optional filters include location, race, gender, and age range. VADOC says the data is updated daily but can be inaccurate or out of date, so record the date of the search.
- Use the DOC ID when available because it separates people with similar names.
- Otherwise, enter the full name and use only supported refiners.
- Compare identifying facts before opening a result.
- Read the exact location, custody or supervision status, and date label.
- Treat a future Release Date as projected while custody continues.
- Confirm an unclear projected date through VADOC under its public-information procedure.
- For a completed release, compare the result with release papers or an agency record.
The official VADOC search form provides the statewide route for a Stafford state-prison case. It does not cover every short local RRJ sentence. An absent result can mean the person never entered VADOC's public scope, has fully discharged, or was not matched correctly.
Where Virginia DOC Releases Go
A Stafford state prisoner may return to the community, report to a supervision district, move under an approved plan, or enter another custodian's control. VADOC's release process says an approved pickup or public transportation may be arranged. The person receives a notification-of-release letter when the sentence is satisfied and may sign an Order of Release, Conditions of Probation, or Conditions of Parole.
Stafford is served by Fredericksburg District 21. A locator record that names District 21 indicates state community supervision. It does not show the earlier physical gate time or prove that supervision is finished. If an ICE or other detainer applies, the person can leave VADOC custody without entering the community. Follow the receiving agency rather than labeling the event a full release.

A fully discharged person may require VADOC's inactive-offender record form because the locator claims current custody and supervision coverage, not permanent public profiles. If exact sentence terms are disputed, obtain the signed Stafford court orders too. The court establishes the sentence, while VADOC records its computation and state release.
Virginia DOC Stafford Release Dates
VADOC's public description calls the locator field Release Date. Agency operating materials call the working calculation a projected release date, and RRJ calls the date on the Legal Update Sheet estimated. Those words are not interchangeable with actual release. A future date can move when credits, court orders, or sentence inputs change.
Virginia uses different credit systems based on offense dates and sentence type. The official time-computation explanation separates older Good Conduct Allowance from Earned Sentence Credits for eligible post-1994 felonies. Rates and eligibility vary by offense and credit level. Disciplinary events can cause credits to be withheld or lost, while corrected jail credit or a changed order can move the calculation.
VADOC staff may confirm a projected release date at the time of inquiry under Operating Procedure 010.3, but protected detail can remain confidential. Compare the locator, Legal Update Sheet, credits, and completed release record before treating the projected date as final.
Prove a Virginia DOC Release
The strongest evidence is a completed VADOC release or discharge record. A notification-of-release letter, signed conditions, and the agency's actual event can show what occurred. A past locator date can support the conclusion, but its meaning depends on the present status and location. A Parole Board grant authorizes a path; it is not proof that the person crossed the prison gate.
For parole cases, compare the applicable monthly Board report with VADOC records. For a person shown at District 21, verify that the location reflects supervision rather than confinement. For a person who no longer appears, use the inactive-offender records route. If another jurisdiction received the person, obtain the transfer or receiving record.

Virginia DOC Search Limits
The VADOC locator includes state prisoners, district-supervised probationers and parolees, certain local or regional jail inmates under state authority, institutional-hospital patients, and CCAP participants. It does not claim every local detainee. A Stafford misdemeanor sentence may begin and end at RRJ without producing a useful state locator result.
The closed Stafford Men's CCAP creates a further stale-data risk. VADOC closed that site on June 30, 2024 and relocated participants. Older records may call it Stafford Correctional Unit #21 or a diversion center. Do not treat the old facility name as current custody. Use the present locator and facility directory to identify the current placement.
Note: Stafford County has a VADOC supervision office but no active state prison listed in the current state facility directory.
Stafford CCAP Release Redirect
Stafford Men's Community Corrections Alternative Program closed on June 30, 2024, and VADOC relocated its participants. Older sources may still use Stafford Correctional Unit #21 or Stafford Diversion Center. Those names are historical leads, not current destinations. A person once assigned there should be searched in the present VADOC locator and facility directory.
The closure also shows why a release search needs dates. A record created before closure can correctly name the Stafford site, while a current result should identify the later placement or supervision office. Do not call the relocation a community release. VADOC stated that participants moved to other facilities, so the custody or program path continued under a new location.
Request Virginia DOC Release Proof
A narrow request is easier to route and less likely to sweep in protected material. Ask for the existing public offender or release fields, the notification-of-release letter, or another specifically identified discharge record. Include the Stafford court case only as context. VADOC may confirm the projected date while withholding personal, medical, treatment, or security detail.
If the state record and court sentence appear inconsistent, send copies of the Legal Update Sheet and every signed sentencing order to the VADOC Correspondence Unit or Court and Legal Section at the Richmond mailing address. Ask the agency to verify jail credit, sentence structure, and the current projection. Do not calculate the answer from the imposed term alone.
For an actual release, ask whether the record shows discharge, parole, probation, or transfer. Request the exact date label and destination field as kept. A transfer record should lead to the receiving custodian, while a District 21 assignment should lead to state supervision confirmation. These narrow questions preserve the difference between leaving prison and ending every legal term.
